Anstey's Cove

Devon

Located on the coast path between Torquay and Babbacombe, a steep hill takes you down to Anstey's Cove: a small, quiet shingle beach with clear blue sea and stunning views across Lyme Bay to the Dorset coast. There is a shop and family-run cafe on the beach, as well as deck chair and kayak hire. Surrounded by woodland, this peaceful beach is dog friendly and is a beautiful location for photographs, with its limestone cliffs and interesting rock formations. Reputedly a favourite spot of author Agatha Christie, who is famously associated with Torquay - it is said that on this beach, Christie met the RAF pilot upon whom she based a character in her novel 'Five Little Pigs'. Considering the grisly fate of that character (poisoned by hemlock in his beer), perhaps it can be assumed how that particular meeting went, but we assure you that your trip will be much more pleasant than this. One of the very finest Torquay beaches, it is also a destination for those looking to be active: rock climbers are known to enjoy several of the crags, while walkers visit for the coastal paths leading to Hope's Nose - part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest with uncommon wildlife and fantastic views across the bay.
