8 Best Dog-friendly Beaches in Devon and Cornwall

Not all beaches allow dogs throughout the year, however, there are still many sprawling beaches and coves for you and your dogs to enjoy, the South West has some of the best beaches in the UK so there is plenty of choice. Here is a list of the top eight dog friendly beaches in Devon and Cornwall where dogs are allowed all year.

Hele Bay , Devon

Just to the East of Ilfracombe is Hele Bay a sand and shingle cove. Located adjacent to Hillsborough Nature Reserve, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag award for its safe clean waters.  There are rock pools on both sides of the beach at low tide. Dogs are allowed all year.


Westward Ho!, Devon

Westward Ho! beach allows dogs all year round, from September to May they are only allowed at the north end of the beach between Sandymere Bridge and the Taw/Torridge Estuary

. This beach caters for any tourist's needs - just above the large pebble ridge, there are arcades and shops, various coffee and food outlets, and surf hire. Westward Ho! beach is perfect for surfing and swimming. When the tide is out, the vast extent of sand makes for a relaxing walk.


Trebarwith Strand, Cornwall

The beach at Trebarwith Strand is a long stretch of golden sand backed by flat rocks and beyond these steep cliffs. At low tide, the beach extends almost a mile.  At the left side of the beach are several caves, some of these are quite deep and little eerie if you fancy exploring. There are many rock pools which contain a wealth of sea life as well as two larger pools ideal for younger children. With plenty of facilities and seasonal lifeguards, Trebarwith Strand is a great family beach and is dog friendly all year round,  Beware the beach completely disappears at high tide.


Crantock Beach, Cornwall

When the tide is out at Crantock beach, there is seemingly endless golden sand backed by dunes. Popular for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and wind-surfing  The beach is clean, dog friendly and has a lifeguards service. Crantock has nearby toilets and cafes, a 150 spaces car park and a campsite. This beach is good in every respect and is highly recommended by us as a day out.


Porthcurnick beach ,Cornwall

Just North of Portscatho lies the isolated beach of Porthcurnick is a sandy beach backed by high cliffs on the Roseland Peninsula.  Easily accessible and dogs are allowed all year to enjoy the secluded open area. It is perfect for swimming and snorkeling and is home to the hidden hut café that is open every day from 10 am-4pm for delicious, fresh locally sourced food perfect after a long day at the beach.  


Sandymouth beach, Cornwall


A popular but unspoilt beach of pebbles and sand backed by incredible twisted cliffs. At very low tides, it is possible to walk the two miles along the beach between Bude and Sandymouth. Returning by the coast path makes it a very pleasant, circular walk. Sandymouth has a large, manned, car park with 200 spaces at the top of the cliff and is owned by the national trust

There are seasonal lifeguards and many rock pools for the kids to enjoy.


Slapton Sands, Devon

Slapton Sands beach is mainly shingle and pebble but it does not take away from the undeniably beautiful coastline and scenery. The beach is backed by Slapton Ley - a large freshwater lake and nature reserve. It is popular with families because of the calm waters and plenty of space.  Dogs are welcome all year round. There is easy access from the main roads with disabled facilities at the beach and a lifeguard from May to September.


Wonwell beach, Devon

Wonwell beach also known as Kingston beach is 14 miles from Plymouth is on the east of Erne river and estuary and at low tide joins up with Mothecombe beach so there is plenty of space to enjoy with walks along the estuary or the south west coast path.  Dogs are allowed all year. Although there are not many parking spaces and it very busy in summer, it is still a very popular destination for the calm, clear water and peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. It is ideal for a day out with the family to enjoy the stunning views.
