Exploring the South West Christmas Markets

Devon and Cornwall are full of wonderful things to see and do at any time of year but with the countdown to Christmas underway, it's the perfect time to explore the region and sample some yuletide cheer. With plenty of Christmas markets in full swing, filled with delicious food and amazing crafts, they make an ideal chance to buy some unique gifts for your loved ones.

Here are just a few of our favourite South West Christmas markets for you to explore...

Exeter Christmas Market

The Exeter Christmas Market boasts an exciting mix of continental and local traders based in the shadow of the stunning Exeter Cathedral. From November 16th to December 19th, the market creates a buzz in the heart of this historical city as it attracts over 600,000 guests each year. Christmas crafts, gifts and exquisite food, surrounded by local carol singers and choirs add to the festive atmosphere while you shop.

Plymouth Christmas Market

Relax and unwind with a glass of mulled wine or cider alongside a tasty treat from the Bavarian-style bar at the Plymouth Christmas Market, which takes place from November 28th to December 19th. With over 50 stalls based in gorgeous log cabins offering bespoke trinkets and foodie delights, there is plenty to see and do for market-goers.

Totnes Christmas Market

The Totnes Christmas Market is a smaller option but still boasts over 50 stalls. The town bursts with a festive atmosphere, the cobbled streets are laced with glistening lights and there is plenty of local entertainment, making Totnes Christmas Market a truly magical place to bring the whole family. The market takes place on the following Tuesday evenings throughout December - the 3rd, 10th and 17th.

Fowey Christmas Market

The popular Fowey Christmas Market takes place across the small Cornish town from December 6th to December 8th, kicking off on the Friday evening with carols, a visit from Santa and the Christmas lights switch-on, transforming the town into a winter wonderland. With over 200 carefully chosen local traders and a fantastic selection of locally sourced food and drink, this is a festive experience that is not to be missed.

Padstow Christmas Festival

For the past eleven years, the Padstow Christmas Festival has demonstrated an array of unique craft and food stalls filled with perfect stocking fillers. From December 6th to December 9th, embrace the festive season in this captivating waterside setting, while trying locally-produced liqueurs and award-winning delicacies. There will also be demonstrations to inspire your Christmas dinner from cooking legends such as Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth and Nathan Outlaw - these are free to attend but have limited seating, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

These are some of our favourites but, we would love to hear about any others you come across on your travels. So, put on the winter woollies, grab your brolly and head off to explore the delights of the Christmas markets!
